CADWiz™ and FreeCAD questions
Short, honest answers about learning, STL files, workbenches, 3D-print design, and CADWiz™.
Learning FreeCAD
Is FreeCAD hard to learn?
FreeCAD can feel hard at first. It has many tools, workbenches, and technical names, so a new user may not know where to begin. Start with one small design and learn only the tools it needs. CADWiz is being built to provide plain guidance, but that guided experience is still in development.
Editing STL files
How do I edit or remix an STL file?
An STL file is a triangle mesh, not a normal editable CAD model. FreeCAD can import it, inspect it, and sometimes convert or repair it. Simple cuts may work, but major changes often need mesh tools or a rebuilt parametric model. Keep the original file and check the repaired shape before manufacturing.
FreeCAD extensions
What is a FreeCAD addon or workbench?
A workbench is a group of tools for one kind of job. For example, Part Design is used for solid models. An addon is an extra package installed outside the main FreeCAD download. CADWiz is designed as a FreeCAD workbench, but its public release is not available yet.
Designing for 3D printing
Do I need to know CAD to design 3D prints?
No, but some CAD knowledge helps you check the result. You need accurate sizes, enough wall thickness, and a shape that can be manufactured safely. CADWiz aims to guide beginners while keeping the result editable in FreeCAD. Printing and physical validation remain separate steps.
About CADWiz
Do I need FreeCAD to use CADWiz?
Yes. FreeCAD is required. CADWiz is a FreeCAD workbench, not a separate program — it installs into FreeCAD and works inside it. FreeCAD is free and open source, the download is straightforward, and setup takes minutes. You do not need to know how to use FreeCAD; that is what CADWiz is for.
What is CADWiz?
CADWiz is your smart CAD buddy for FreeCAD. It is being built to help people explain an idea, create or improve editable CAD, and understand the work. Public demonstrations must use authentic evidence. CADWiz is still in active development, so not every planned workflow is available.
Is CADWiz free?
CADWiz is not publicly obtainable today. The website currently offers a beta application â an October FreeCAD group, a November Blender group, or both â not a downloadable product or a paid plan. CADWiz Tier 1 runs free and on your own computer. Beta testing needs your own API credits from OpenAI or Anthropic.
Does CADWiz work offline?
Offline operation is not a verified public promise yet. CADWiz includes local components and FreeCAD runs on your computer, but some planned AI features may use external services. The product will label local and connected behavior clearly when those release details are validated.
